Various dishes, barrels and clothes props. Washington Lane was parallel to Washington Street, which ran from Sussex Street to Darling Harbour, just north of Bathurst Street.

The bubonic plague epidemic of 1900 caused widespread public panic and precipitated onerous cleansing efforts by inner city municipal councils. The Council established a Plague Prevention Department in 1900 when the bubonic plaque hit Sydney. Washington Lane was one of many harbourside areas quarantined in 1900. Outbreaks of the plague continued in Sydney into the 1920s. Cleansing efforts were photographed as a means of documenting conditions and the impact of cleansing activities.
