Behind them is a group of children crowded on the back steps to pose for the council's photographer in circa 1900. The water standpipe in the yard may have been the household’s only supply of water. J W Haxby was the last occupant of this typical timber workman’s dwelling in 1900. With its collapsing paling fence and broken window and roof tiles, it had seen better days and was earmarked for demolition in just a few months.
