Council Plans II

Unique IDAS-0782Start date1st January 1927End date1st January 1990FormatPlanDescriptionThis series contains plans drawn by Council's Architects or drawn for Council by outside contractors. It includes plans of buildings, sporting facilities, public housing, street furniture such as garbage bins and lamp standards, conveniences, playgrounds, and substations.

The plans are identified by job numbers allocated to each job as it was received by Council's Architects. The earliest job number in this series is 520, for office accommodation near the Town Hall in 1928. The earlier Council plans are in CRS 569, Council Plans I, 1870-1928. These earlier plans are not identified by job numbers and it is possible that the practice of assigning job numbers to the plans did not start until 1928, when four departments, including the City Architect's and the City Surveyor's, were amalgamated to form CA 61, City Engineering and Building Surveyor's Department, 1928-1936.

The job number was also allocated to specifications drawn up for the work which are contained in CRS 130.

Some of the plans in this series were submitted to Council as building applications to be approved by the City Building Surveyor. These plans are annotated with the Building Application number, an annual single number eg. 136/57, as well as a job number.

Some of the items in this series are available only in microfilm copy form, as the originals are missing.

In preparing the list of items in this record series, the date of a sheet of plans has usually been set at '1 January' of the year in which it was produced, not at the exact date it was drafted or signed off, which is sometimes noted but can be difficult to establish.
