Council Plans I

Unique IDAS-0569Start date1st January 1870End date1st January 1984FormatPlanDescriptionThis record series contains plans drawn by Council's architects and occasionally by outside contractors. It includes markets, hotels, substations, street furniture (garbage bins, lamp standards etc), conveniences, community facilities and incinerators. The plans are hand-coloured prints, linen tracings or blueprints and occasionally are signed by the Town Clerk and the contractors carrying out the building work.

Most or all of the plans for other Council buildings such as the Sydney Town Hall, the Queen Victoria Building, the Pyrmont Power Station, the Hippodrome and the Capitol Theatre, have been removed and placed in separate record series. (See 'series related' field).

The earliest drawings in this series are 1870 plans of the Exhibition Building. Most of the series pre-dates 1928, although there are a few drawn in 1933. In 1984 two plans for the Strickland Buildings were drawn using the old numbers with a suffix of "A" and "B", eg 1260A and 1260B. These later plans have been left in this record series.

Some of the plans have as many as three different numbers on them. They have the drawing and sheet numbers given to them when they were first drawn, as well as a later number stamped in purple ink on the bottom left-hand corner. This later numbering system has been retained as the control number for this series. It is not known when this system was imposed on the plans although it could have been in 1928 when the City Architect's Department came under the control of the City Engineer.

The plans were divided into two sets - tracings (those on linen) and prints (those on paper). Each set was then numbered consecutively and listed with the prefix "P" for prints and "T" for tracings. CRS 334, Index to Council Plans I, contains a list of the plans that were numbered in this way.
