Newsclippings Books
Description
Unique IDAS-0759Start date1st January 1923End date1st January 1965FormatNewscuttingDescriptionThis series contains newsclippings dealing with every facet of the Council, including the elected aldermen and the Council administration. Most of the cuttings have been grouped by newspaper and pasted into scrapbooks. Some of the books have been indexed (Item 1 is fully indexed, item 2 has been partially indexed).
Newspapers clipped include: SMH, Sun, Guardian, Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, Truth, Australian, and (for the books maintained for Jensen) some trades union journals.
Later cuttings books (see boxes 7-19) seem to have been maintained as a special service for Lord Mayor Harry Jensen and are titled 'Lord Mayor's Press Cutting Books' on the spines. These books are no longer maintained to keep cuttings from different newspapers separate, but place all cuttings in one chronological sequence. These books cover events outside the Council's field of interest, such as Labor party issues and events (mainly at NSW level) and events and issues current in Sydney generally in which Jensen had an interest.
Book 41-49 were donated to the Archives by descendants of former Lord Mayor Stanley Crick. Book 41, in particlular, documents Stanley Crick's career before and after his election to Lord Mayor.
The cuttings are glued or sellotaped into place, into guardbooks of approx quarto page size, quarter-bound in green cloth leather. Many are folded. The poor quality of the materials (cuttings, use of sellotape, paper used for the volume pages) means the books are generally in fair to poor condition.
