- newsclippings
- pamphlets
- guides
- ephemera
- photos
- biographical information
- correspondence
- research enquiries and responses
- compiled histories, and
- photocopied sections of secondary resources.

Many of the files originated from the Library Department which created and kept news clipping files and bound volumes in their Newspaper room based in the Queen Victoria Building (QVB). In 1983, when the Central Library moved to Pitt Street, many of the newsclipping records were destroyed. In the 1990s, the Library rebuilt their information files collection mostly through the efforts of the Reference Librarians, such as Felicity Lynch who along with library assistants clipped relevant materials for reference and local history files. Local Studies Librarians continued to add to the files.

In 1997, the Library's Information File collection was transferred to the Archives Department when Ross Connell, the Local Studies Librarian (who had been the City's first Local Studies Librarian but had later acted in various positions) was transferred from the Library Department to the Archives Department. At this point, the Library's Information file collection was merged with the Archives' small collection of Information Files.
