Single-storey fish halls, with corrugated iron roofs partly elevated to allow for daylight. The red brick building has arches and facade decorated with lighter coloured bricks in patterns. In the distance is the smokestack and clock tower. An ornate street gas lamp stands on one corner.

The Eastern Market on Forbes Street was built in 1872 primarily for the sale of fish and later became more generally known as the City Corporation Fish Market. IN 1896 marble tables were installed to receive fish for sale. They proved to be so useful that they were transferred to the new municipal fish markets built in Thomas Street in 1910.
