The files contain letters received, copies of letters sent, reports, etc. They are filed mostly in alphabetical runs. Boxes 1-5 contain correspondence from 1975 to 1988, boxes 6-14 from 1972-1993, boxes 15-16 relate to the 1989 Festival, boxes 17-19 to the 1990 Festival, boxes 20-21 to the 1991 Festival, boxes 22-23 to legal papers concerning a defalcation, box 24 to the 1991/1992 Carnivale, boxes 25-28 to the Domain Concerts from 1992 to 1994, and box 29 to the 1993 Festival. Boxes 33325 to 33328 were received from the office of the Deputy Director, Brett Sheehy, and range from 1994 to 2000.

Until the appointment of Stephen Hall as Executive Director (later General Manager) of the Sydney Festival, in November 1975, the Festival did not have its own staff. Secretarial services were provided by staff of Sydney City Council. This means that there are two series of correspondence files relating to the Festival of Sydney, this series, created by staff of the Festival, and CRS 907, Sydney Committee Correspondence, created by staff of Sydney City Council.

The Festival of Sydney had its origins in the Waratah Festivals which were run from 1956 to 1973 by the Sydney Committee. The Sydney Committee was established in 1956 to promote and organise spring festivals and Australia Day celebrations.

Declining interest and sponsorship in the Waratah Festival led to a rethink about the nature of the Festival. Stephen Hall, formerly Artistic Director of the Australian Opera was approached to submit a report to the Sydney Committee on a new festival for Sydney. His recommendations included holding a summer festival in January, and changing the Sydney Committee from an unincorporated committee to a non-profit company, limited by guarantee. This occurred on 28 September 1976.

The first Sydney festival was held in January 1977.
