Works Committee I

Unique IDAG-0048DescriptionThis Committee inherited some of the functions of CA 124, Finance Committee. From about 1891 to 1898 there were only two Committees operating in Council, the Finance Committee and CA 115, Lighting Committee. The Finance Committee during this period was in fact a Committee of the whole Council.

Prior to 1891, the work of CA 48, Works Committee I, was carried out by CA 119, Improvement Committee, 1844-1891. In 1898, Council decided the work would be better controlled by a system of small committees and the Works Committee was appointed a standing committee.

It was responsible for supervising construction and maintenance of the streets, drainage, cleansing, and implementing the provisions of the Sydney Corporation Act, the City of Sydney Improvement Act and other statutes affecting buildings, drains, and street works. It was also responsible for supervising the preparation of tenders, contracts and specifications, and matters affecting the safety, health and protection of city residents. In 1901 it acquired responsibility to resume land for the construction and widening of streets.

The Committee was also responsible for approval or refusal of subdivisions, development (from 1945) and building applications, implementation of Parts XI and XIIA of the Local Government Act, Ordinance 70 (Buildings) (from 1973), control of the Council fleet of motor vehicles, and acceptance of tenders and quotations.

In 1977, responsibility for management of Council's properties was taken over by CA 54, Properties Committee, 1977-1984.

In 1980, the Committee's responsibilities relating to building and development regulation were acquired by CA 56, Planning and Development Committee originally named the City Planning Committee.
