The Friends was set up to raise public and Council awareness of its importance to the citizens of this City and State in its educational, leisure and information service role and engender good will and support for Council and community.

The Friends Society aimed to liaise with the Library as to its needs and help raise funds to purchase items by hosting special events; seek sponsorships and donations, lobbying for increase in Council, State and Federal funding; as well as providing a team of volunteers to assist the Library performing non professional work.

The Friends were first formed on Wednesday 6 October, 1993 with a steering committee and a draft constitution. The Friends of the Sydney City Library was incorporated on 19 April 1995.

The records comprise minutes of meetings; events ephemera and photographs; Constitution, Roles and Rules.
