New Year's Eve Records
Description
Unique IDAS-1004Start date19th July 1996End date19th July 1996FormatVarious - See Descriptive NoteDescriptionThis series contains records of the celebrations organised by the City of Sydney, to mark New Year's Eve. The City employs a large, professional project team dedicated to delivering this large-scale event.
Sydney New Year's Eve continues to be the largest annual fireworks display in the world and since its inception in 1995, has developed into the world's most watched New Year's Eve celebration. The celebrations commence at 1pm, with events happening up to the 9pm and midnight fireworks.
This series includes photographic albums, media clippings binders, publicity reports, production manuals, and binders holding information such as artwork, websites, directional signage and site plans.
The first photographic albums are from Lord Mayor Frank Sartor's trip to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. From 1999 to 2005 there are albums covering the Lord Mayor's Picnic, the Lord Mayor's Mask Party, the Global Village, NYE for Kids, Carnaval, Media Launch, Bump In, Harbour of Light Parade and the Fireworks display.
The images include: the 'sea creature' floating lanterns on the harbour, the fireworks display, and the entertainment events. There are crowd shots, images of entertainers, celebrities and street performers, staff at work and views of the harbour bridge and opera house illuminated,
Much of the imagery for NYE 2000 was taken by staff of the 'First Light' photo agency, and is marked with their copyright. However all copyright in the images was acquired by the City Council as part of the project conditions [information advised by Mr Brian Keogh, Major Events Unit, Office of the General Manager, 24 Feb 2000].
The images format include: prints (various sizes but mainly 4"x6"), 35mm and large format transparencies and some negatives. All images are colour.
In 2002 the NYE team also produced some events for Australia Day as well as the Bali Bombing Tribute Concert on 20 October. These events are represented by two albums of photographs (Item 125 & 126).
As of February 2007, only the photographs from NYE 1999/2000 have been digitised to ArchivePix.
