The Sesquicentenary (1842-1992) celebrations in 1992 appear to have been the impetus for the Council to become involved with street banners on a large scale. The Council now owns a large number of flagpoles at various city locations, which are available for hire to clients wishing to use them for advertising banners. Council also uses the flagpoles for its own promotions, and for seasonal banners such as for Christmas and the Royal Easter Show.

This series also contains an example of the Council's own flag, which is based on heraldic elements from the Council arms.
