Unique IDAS-0847Start date1st January 1972End date1st January 1974FormatLoose PapersDescriptionOn 10 August 1970 Council resolved to form a sub-committee to investigate the possibility of the erection of a new office building at the rear of the Town Hall to house Council's staff. At this time, the staff were housed in the Town Hall itself, in Block A (a building behind the Town Hall), the Queen Victoria Building, and the Simmons Building (at the rear of Block A). Ancher, Mortlock, Murray & Woolley Architects were retained by Council to work on the proposed building.

On 22 March 1971 Council resolved to proceed with the building. The black and white photographs in this series were taken by the City Engineer's Department as a record of the excavation and construction of Town Hall House. The first album is labelled "Condition of Stone Work, Town Hall Sydney", and contains photographs taken in May 1972 showing the stone work of the Town Hall after Block A had been demolished.

The second album is labelled "Town Hall House Photographic Record No. 1", and contains photographs taken from June 1972 to December 1973 of the construction of Town Hall House. If there was a second volume it is missing. The photographs have been allocated item numbers by the Archives Section.

The other prints and negatives in this series were also taken by the Engineer's but were not pasted into albums. These range from 5 May 1972 to 8 April 1974.
