These drawings are known in the Department as "tracings" or "linens". On completion the linen is copied. The paper copy is called the office copy and is used to record alterations, file references, comments/annotations, and approval stamps or signatures. The linen drawing however remains as executed.

Often the linen is copied and the copies used to record different engineering or survey work.

The linens are arranged into sizes: foolscap, double and triple foolscap, 'elephant' and 'double elephant'. The plans are assigned a consecutive number and corresponding size in abbreviated form, for example, 215 fscp, 342 fscp, 10E, 523 DE. This series is held in the plan rooms of the City and South Sydney Councils.

Linen drawings vary in subject matter and include resumptions, traffic arrangements, acquisition, naming, sale, purchase etc. The drawings are accessed through street cards in the City Engineer's Index to Tracings, 1902+, which is arranged alphabetically by street name.
