Indexes to Minutes of Council

Unique IDAS-0001Start date3rd January 1850End date24th October 1899FormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionThese are the indexes to the Minutes of Council for the period 1842-1899. They are arranged alphabetically, listing the subject matter (i.e. street name, surname of staff member, activity) and the relevant page number in the Minutes. The indexes were given a volume number or letter, corresponding to the volume of the Minutes that they index. For example, Index volume No 5 relates to Minute Book No 5.

The first four volumes of the indexes, which would have related to Minute Books Numbers 1 to 4 and covered 1842 to 1849, are missing. The earliest extant Index Book is No 5, for 1850 to 1852.

Committee Reports, Mayor's Reports, Appointments (of staff), Petitions, Memorials, and Tenders Accepted were indexed in separate sub-sections, generally at the back of the relevant alphabetical section. Within the separate alphabetical sections, the entries were recorded in chronological order.

The Appointment sub-section records the following information: date, name, office, salary and page number, and is in all the indexes except for the years 1854 to 1857, when Commissioners replaced the elected Council.

For the years 1850 to 1853 and 1857 to 1899 the following Committee Reports were cited in the Indexes: By-Laws, Improvement, Lighting, Market (1850-1853), Special, Sewers (1857-1899) and Water. The Committee Report entries record the following information: subject, date received, how disposed of, and page number.

The Mayor's reports record the date, subject, date received, and whether adopted. The Tenders Accepted noted the work to be carried out, contractor, amount and page number. The Petitions and Memorials has the same format as the Committee Reports, except that a note was made of which Committee the petition was forwarded to.

The index for 1893 to 1899 (CRS 1/18) contains a special section between the letters WW and X called "Reports", which listed Reports called for in Council, noting the name of the writer, name of the report, and page number.

From 1900 onwards indexes were bound into the front of each annual volume of the Proceedings of Council.
