Decorations in streets and public spaces

Unique IDAY-0117DescriptionThis activity covers all aspects of the provision of temporary decorations and effects in streets and public spaces. Examples include: planter boxes of flowers, the annual Christmas tree in Martin Place, banners promoting events.

On 27 November 1900 the Minutes of the Works Committee recorded that various applications had been received "for permission to erect temporary structures in connection with Commonwealth celebrations." These Minutes also included the decision for action to be taken regarding the removal of pictures from the Commonwealth Arch on 9 April 1901 (CRS 12/1). Then on 6 May 1902 the Minutes recorded a recommendation by the Building Surveyor that "the Town Hall shall be illuminated by electrical light on the occasion of the Coronation celebrations." (CRS 12/2)

In the Minutes of the Electric Lighting Committee from 1906 there was discussion of the arrangments for temporary lighting at Christmas (CRS 14/3, 17 December 1906). In 1908 this Committee also discussed the supply of electricity for illuminations during the visit of the American Fleet (CRS 14/3, various).
