General Purposes Committee

Unique IDAG-0123DescriptionThe General Purposes Committee was a Committee of the whole Council. Its responsibility was to consider "all matters affecting the staff and other matters not specially relegated to any special committee". (Town Clerk's Annual Report, 1904, page 56).

From the late 1880's to 1898, Council had worked with only two Committees, CA 124, Finance Committee I, which at that time was a Committee of the whole Council, and a special Electric Lighting committee. In 1898 the Town Clerk reported that "hitherto the work has been dealt with by Committee of the whole Council. Under the belief that the work can be better controlled by a system of small Committees these have been appointed as follows, of eight members each: - Finance and Works, as standing Committees. For specific duties the following have been appointed: - Electric Lighting, Garbage and Refuse Disposal, By-Laws Revision. A General Purposes Committee composed of the whole Council has also been appointed to deal with special matters requiring a general discussion prior to adoption by the Council". (TC Report 1898, page 13).

From 1903, it took responsibility for staff matters from CA 101, Staff and Labour Committee.

The General Purposes Committee continued to exist, although it did not report to every Council meeting, until the Council was replaced by Commissioners under the City of Sydney Act 1987.
