Erskineville Municipal Council
Unique IDAG-0065DescriptionThe Municipalities Act 1858 allowed for the incorporation of areas of NSW (other than the City of Sydney which functioned under its own 1842 legislation) as municipalities with local government organisations. The approval process required a petition from at least fifty householders in an area. A new municipality could be created from an area previously unincorporated, or from an area within the boundary of an existing municipality.
Erskineville Municipality was brought into existence by means of a simple change of name by Macdonaldtown Municipality (see CRS 598/4). A map of Macdonaldtown is attached, dating from the 1880s, showing municipal boundaries and the Ward divisions.
This agency has been created by the City of Sydney Archives to cover all the corporate and administrative offices of the Erskineville Municipal Council. Apart from the corporation (the group of Alderman headed by the Mayor) the suburban municipalities surrounding the City of Sydney usually employed only a Town Clerk and a handful of other administrative staff.
From 1 January 1949, Erskineville was absorbed by Sydney City Council.CreationResolution of Macdonaldtown Council 27 March 1893AbolitionLocal Government (Areas) Act 1948
