Tall cranes in the distance are busy constructing Anthony Hordern & Son’s enormous new retail emporium on Brickfield Hill. A number of Chinese businesses, factories and lodging houses rented shopfronts in Fox’s Buildings, constructed in 1895, including Quan Hing’s store and Kwong Mow On & Co, importers. By the time this photograph was taken by Charles Kent in 1902, the two-storey shops here were owned by Samuel Hordern. A group of workmen sit and stand around an ornate gas lamp.
